Product Description The Dean Playmate JT Junior kids acoustic guitar features a 1/2 size student body, steel string acoustic design, a traditional set neck, chrome hardware, signature Dean bridge, chrome tuners, dot inlays and 18 frets. Available with a gloss natural finish.About Dean Guitars - A Quick History Lesson...Dean Guitars was born in 1976, in the attic of the Chicago suburban childhood home of company founder Dean B. Zelinsky. The eighteen-year-old Zelinsky was convinced that guitar design and manufacturing had hit a wall. Rock music was huge and guitar makers were failing to keep up with the times. The world was ready for a guitar that looked, played, and sounded superior to what was available from manufacturers at that time. Zelinsky had a better idea. What followed was a line of electric guitars that for the first time allowed players to play to their potential. With its highly visible V-shaped headstock and trademark wing logo, Dean became in effect, the first boutique guitar line in the history of rock music. These guitars had to be played to be believed, and played they were! Dean guitars started showing up on rock stages worldwide, album covers, and especially on the newly emerging channel calledMTV. Dean Guitars were featured in the award-winningMTV Video of the Yearthree of the first four years running. By the time Dean created the famousSpinning Fur GuitarsDean's early place in Rock history was firmly cemented.Over a quarter century later, you can still buy that same USA made boutique Dean Guitar. Today, Dean Guitars has taken that same concept of creating a superior instrument to a whole new level. Dean is now a full line of fretted instruments including electric and acoustic guitars, basses, jazz guitars, resonators, banjos and mandolins. More importantly, Dean is dedicated to delivering these fine quality instruments at a value that is second to none.-

passable travel guitar May 28, 2010 R. King purchased this guitar to carry around for travel. a little disappointed with the quality of the neck & frets, a lot of vibration & difficult to tune. the body looks solid though. sound is 5/10 but expected from small guitar. i wont recommend as a travel guitar for adults if u have extra cash to spend.
Dean Playmate Product Review April 14, 2010 Mark Cataldo (Malden, Ma USA) The Dean Playmate 1/2 size guitar is for children from 5 to 8 years of age that are interested in learning how to play the guitar. Other viewers say that it's more than a toy, and that's somewhat true. You should buy this instrument, with the intent of having your child learn how to play the guitar. It has normal tuning pegs, and acoustic guitar bridge pins, just like a any other acoustic guitar.
For a $45.00 guitar, we know that Dean isn't gonna put a lot of time, and detail into this instrument, with that being said, my only complaint is that the action is a little high for a beginner. Maybe the extremely light strings will makeup for that. On the other hand the strings will break rather easily, so make sure your child doesn't over turn the tuning pegs, or the strings will break.
Sounds like a Ukulele August 17, 2009 C. Warro I recently purchased a guitar for me to learn and my children were so intrigued that they wanted to do something while I was playing. I wanted to get an inexpensive guitar that was appropriate for there size since they were 5. It's the perfect size for them but it does not sound like a guitar at all. It's more like a Ukulele. It is worth the money and its fun for the kids but do not expect to have the same sounds.
Good deal for the price May 22, 2009 Brad Watson (Wellsville, NY) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I purchased this 1/2 scale guitar for my daughter's 6th birthday. A couple of years ago I had purchased a 3/4 scale acoustic guitar made by Lauren, and I have never been able to really get it in tune or keep it in tune. Since my daughter has shown interest in playing the guitar, I figured that I needed to get something that at least sounded like a normal guitar. In talking with a local music store owner, he mentioned that the only brand that he has good luck with when it comes to child-sized guitars is Dean, so I decided to try the Dean Playmate.
So far, so good with the Dean Playmate. The finish on the guitar is nice, the tuners seem very solid, the shape of the tailpiece gives it a very distinctive look, and the size is perfect for a small child. It is a little bit hard for me to play since the spacing between the frets is so small, but my daughter seems to have no problem with it. I have a new set of strings for it, but I am letting her play around with it for now with the original strings, as it seems to stay in tune just fine with the originals.
Overall, I would say for the money, it is worth every penny for a child's use, especially when their hands are just too small for a standard size guitar.
It is a dream guitar for cheap May 14, 2009 T. Rieger (pennsylvania) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I am an experienced guitar and ukulele player. This little guitar is such a great inbetween instrument. It is the same size as a baritone ukulele, and has the steel strings of a guitar, and the same tuning.
However, I did have to do minor maintence to actually be able to get sound that was clear out of it.
First, there was major fret buzz. You have to get a knife, and in the nut and saddle, thicken the wedges wear the strings go in, and make them deeper.
Second, the standard tuning for a guitar is eadgbe. eadgbe on this size instrument will have to much slack with the strings because of the scale size. So there are to instruments that come similar to this. A guitalele made by yamaha(not sold in the U.S) and a requinto which is a mexican instrument that is also tuned to adgcea. ADGCEA would be the same tuning as putting a capo on the 5th fret of a guitar.
So, tune it up to ADGCEA, the sound is brilliant, and so unexpected.
