| Customer Reviews: Pretty, Nice sound, Easy to play & Stays in tune July 25, 2010 Pieter (Brooklyn, NY, USA) My perspective:
I've been playing acoustic for a couple of generations, and have had a Seagull S12+...this is the closest one I could find on Amazon: Seagull S12+ Cedar Acoustic Guitar...for over 10 years as a comparison. (note: my S12+ has a cedar top, so it has a deeper, more muted sound than the spruce-topped D46S12)
Why I like this guitar and recommend it:
+ it is very pretty, with the many fine Southwest touches on the bindings and Hopi inlays (my S12+ is more understated)
+ it has a bright sound and good volume in both the upper & lower pitches (brighter than my S12+)
+ it is relatively easy to finger & play for a 12-string (easier than my S12+ which has a fatter neck)...I can
even do some blues-bending with little effort...of course strings help)
+ 18:1 ratio Grover tuners, baby!
+ it has consistent pitch up and down the fretboard, tunes easily & stays in tune well (my S12+ is almost as good)
(the D46S12 has the Buzz Feiten Tuning System(tm), which gives it the advantage in this area)
+ it comes with its own hard G70 case (my S12+ did not...I had to buy it separately)
Some neutral/negative comments:
Preface: the first guitar I ordered came in a partially scratched, torn & very dirty case...it looked like it had been sitting in a music store's warehouse for a LONG time. The guitar itself also had issues: it lacked any paperwork, wrapping, tags, etc, and had minor nicks, scratches, white paint(?) on the sides & bindings, a sloppy, very visible headstock-neck joint, and glue & fuzz stuck to the headstock. I contacted Amazon and they sent another...and it was in a similar state. This led me to believe that these may have been "B" guitars that a vendor was clearing out...but this is only speculation.
I ended up keeping one guitar because I loved it in spite of these issues...and my friend loved the other one so much that he happily gave it a new home as well!
- the wood selections can vary widely: I read many online reviews & have seen a few D46S12's...and the quilted
ash back and sides vary from guitar to guitar, as do the spruce tops. If you buy online from a 3rd party
vendor, you might want to ask for a picture if possible...or just go crazy and take a chance!
- the finish work on the guitar is inconsistent...again, this can give it 'personality'
- although the guitar is spec'd to have the Buzz Feiten Tuning System(tm), there is no decal on the headstock's
back, which I was expecting, since the Washburn D10S (Washburn D10 Series Acoustic Guitar (Natural)) has it...but it tunes and plays like it does, which is what's important!
- be aware that the condition of the guitar & case may not be pristine. If you want to get as close as you can to
perfection, then a trip to a local shop is the best route.
I will upload some photos in the near future...meantime, anyone wanting to get into playing 12-string on a very nice sounding & looking guitar, complete with its own case, this is an excellent choice.
